Week 2 Journal

How are rhetorical situations and genre connected? What can our understanding of rhetorical situation and genre help us to understand everyday writing?
Rhetorical situations are connected to genre in that a rhetorical situation is used in a genre to help define and emphasize the genre. A genre is a group of like media that has a common theme; within these genres there can be sub-genres that are more specified. A rhetorical situation is a specific event or problem that has a specific audience that can make a change occur. A common rhetorical situation is a courtroom; there is a judge who has a specific job, a jury who is listening to the problem with a specific job in mind to solve it.

Our understanding of rhetorical situation and genre can help us to understand everyday writing by allowing us to realize that everyday writing is a genera of writing. We can use rhetorical situation to know that everyday writing is going to be a commonplace occurrence with commonplace problems and a commonplace audience.  Once we know the definition of genre and rhetorical situation we can use what we know about them to define what exactly every day writing is and how to recognize it in a large group of other genres.
