For this extra credit assignment, read through bell hook's "Black Vernacular: Architecture as Cultural Practice" and respond to it: what did you learn? What do you find most interesting about hook's piece? Be specific. Also, discuss the role that issues or race, gender, sexuality, or class play in everyday writing.
It’s interesting that bell hooks was able to connect architecture to race, class and gender. When I read the tittle of the text I was not expecting it to be interesting. To be honest I was not sure what to expect, I started reading and turned out to be a very fascinating piece of writing.
ReplyDeleteBell hooks talked about how community can impact our idea that stood out to me because it is true. We see that the environment she lived in affected the house she created. That goes for any author I feel like texts for the most part are impacted by environmental factors. Let’s say for example I was the one asked to create that type of project my house would probably reflect the community where I’m from.
Gender, race, and class also impact an author’s text. Let’s say for example hooks was a man that might have influence the house which she choose to draw. If she was from an upper class community instead of places to read in the house she might have had a lot of closets for clothes and shoes. Race can impact how authors see society which sometimes become an author’s inspiration.
